9-11 Memorial Ceremony
In 2002 a permanent 9-11 memorial was dedicated to the Port Orange Care Center. The memorial is made up of a portion of an I-Beam from the World Trade Center that is mounted in granite from New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, the three states in which the planes crashed. This was a gift from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and was dedicated by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, for Halifax Health - Hospice to use in education and as a memorial.
Each year, Halifax Health - Hospice invite all Military, emergency responders (Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement) New York Transit Authority, Airline representatives and community members to attend our Annual September 11th Memorial Ceremony to remember all the victims of the tragedy on 9/11/01. A brief ceremony is held in front of 9/11 Monument located at Halifax Health - Hospice Port Orange Care Center located at 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, Florida. During the program representatives from the New York City Fire Department, the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania State Police of Shanksville, PA each ring the ceremonial fire bell five times signifying the lost comrades.
"Whether we are New Yorkers or live in Florida, the tragedy of the World Trade Center unified us and reminded us of both the strength and the goodness of the American People. For all of us who were there on September 11, 2001, I express thanks for the prayers and support that were extended to us. Thanks, too, Hospice of Volusia/Flagler for using this piece of the building as a memorial and a reminder of how precious are the freedoms we share." -Rudy Giuliani
